This vintage Vaughan Super Steel double bit axe has been fully restored and carefully reconditioned. The head has been honed to a fine working edge while preserving the Vaughan stamp as much as possible.
Vaughan is a respected American toolmaker known for building hard-use striking and cutting tools with a reputation for durability and jobsite reliability. The Super Steel marking reflects that no-nonsense legacy—made to take real work and keep an edge. As a double bit, this pattern is built for balance and versatility: two matching edges for consistent performance, with the option to dedicate one side to “clean” work and keep the other as a more general-use edge (or simply rotate edges as they wear).
The handle has been custom-finished and sealed for long-term protection, grip, and natural luster. With a substantial 3 lb 6 oz head and a long, powerful 35.5” overall length, this axe carries confident swing momentum while still feeling composed in-hand—ideal for limbing, bucking, and heavier wood work where a full-size tool shines.
Each restoration includes a handmade, full-grain leather edge cover crafted by @dryflyleathergoods—a rugged, timeless complement to the restored steel.
A functional heirloom for collectors, woodsmen, or anyone who values a well-made tool with history and character.

Use + Care
- This double bit arrives razor-sharp. Use with intention, keep your swing path clear, and wear proper safety gear.
- Double bit axes have two exposed edges—handle, carry, and store with extra care, and keep a cover on when not in use.
- After use, wipe the head clean and dry, store indoors, and avoid prolonged exposure to rain, snow, or damp conditions.
- Refresh protection as needed with an occasional coat of War Wax (or a similar topical protectant) on both the steel and handle to help prevent rust and keep the wood conditioned.
